The Attic Coast – Corinth Canal to Sounion
The island itself is arid in the N and E but well Elefsina
wooded in the SW. It has a sizeable population, Oil Refinery
mostly in Salamís town, who are said to be Nea
predominantly of Albanian origin. There is a fair Peramos Kólpos Elevsinos
amount of agriculture on the island, numerous Póros Megarou
market gardens producing vegetables for Athens, Ó. Vasiliki
and a growing number of pistachio groves Pákhi
following the success of pistachio cultivation on Fl.R.3M Salamís Perama L.Fl.R.6s9M
Aígina. On the NW corner of the island is the Fl.4s8M Paloukia Fl(2)25M Piraeus
monastery of Faneromeni, the Apparition of the Ó. Salamís Yard N.
Virgin, the centre of spiritual life on the island and Fl.G Psittalia L.Fl.G.
a popular place of pilgrimage. Buses run from N. Kanákia 6s9M

navigation is prohibited between the E side of
Nísos Salamís and the mainland coast ÓRMOS SALAMÍS
opposite. Navigation is restricted and at night
is prohibited. Anchoring is prohibited Pilotage
everywhere in the channel between Nísos Approach The large bay on the W side of the
Salamís and the mainland from Perama to island has no obvious distinguishing marks but
Kólpos Elevsinos. the general location of the bay is easily
ascertained. From the S the light structure on
Nisís Kanákia will be identified when closer in.
Once into the bay the cluster of houses of
Salamís town will eventually be seen. When the
meltemi is blowing there are gusts into the bay
though little sea is generated across the bay.
Mooring Anchor off the village in 2–5m or go
stern or bows-to in the small basin if you can
find a space. These latter berths are usually
crowded with fishing boats. Laid moorings at
some berths. If you are going to the boatyard
W of the town anchor off the yard in 4–10m.
The bottom is mud, sand and weed, good
holding once through the weed. Good shelter
from the meltemi and open only to the S across
the bay and to the W – westerlies are said not
to blow home.
